With all of the 2010 predictions being made, I thought I’d jump in, too. I’m down with the standard stuff we’re all reading on the new lists coming out just about every day now; mobile, tactile computing, connected TVs, the continued social explosion (hey, “all media is social” dontchaknow), data, data, data, the semantic Web, cloud computing, augmented reality, location based services, Facebook Connect, Google, etc., etc., etc.
Here’s what I’m thinking 2010 will bring (it’s not a complete list, so check back for further ramblings!)
CIOs Kick Ass…and Stick Around
2010 is the year the “Futureproof” CIO is finally introduced to the world. These guys and gals really know how to run an IT business. In fact, in 2010 they finally begin to understand (and learn to articulate to their peers) that it’s the business and the people it serves that drives the implementation and use of technology. People first, technology last. They get it. Do you?
The Peter Principle: No Longer a Career Strategy
2010 will also see a reduction in the number of completely useless middle managers promoted to their highest level of incompetence. It’s like spawning children – some people just aren’t fit to be parents, for whatever the reason(s), and many of these same people should never be allowed to run any portion of a business (or given titles that include words like “strategy”, “operations”, “innovation”, or “digital”). Please, for the sake of your business, the world economy, and the sanity of the people around those you’re intending to advance; think before you promote.
The Term “Digital” is Clearly Defined
Once and for all, in 2010 we’ll finally see the term “digital’ clearly defined. Is it me or has this term, along with “interactive”, been completely misappropriated, or what? Is “digital” the new black? Here’s an exchange that took place at a business function I attended recently:
Bob: Hey man, how have you been?
Me: Pretty damn good, Bob. Lots of great stuff cooking. What about you – what have you been up to?
Bob: I’m in digital now.
Me: Cool. Congrats. What exactly are you doing?
Bob: Yeah, I’m running digital over at XYZ now.
Me: Sounds like you’re having fun – what exactly do you mean by “running digital”?
Bob: You know, the interactive space.
Me: Interactive – I thought you said digital?
Bob: Yeah, digital.
Me: Hey, are those crab puffs over there…great to see you, Bob.
Strategic Networking 2 Publishes (on the Kindle, no less)
I’m going to get this book done before April, dammit. 14 years in the making, the follow-up 2nd Edition to my first book (co-written with @docteled ) will be worth the wait. If I can just convince my wife and kids that I could do my best work from the beach in Cancun over a 2 month period, I’ll be all set.
What do you think is coming in 2010? I’d love to hear from you.
